The Ginkgo tree is also known as Maidenhair tree and is an ancient species that has existed over 300 million years and has endured natural and man-made cataclysms. It has become a symbol of longevity and endurance. The Ginkgo’s bi-lobed leaf, which is green when it blooms and turns a beautiful golden colour in autumn, moved German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1815 to see it as an icon of duality – of two-in-one and one-in-two, like a symbol of love and harmony, or a Western interpretation of Yin & Yang.

The Panther (pantera, pantere) occurs in ancient legends and jewelry, going back to ancient Egypt and the Greeks who thought the panther the animal Dionysus favoured to ride. The panther was also used in South and Central American cultures where it was associated with the sun and solar vibrancy. It also occurs in German heraldry. As a totem the panther is believed to be a fierce and aggressive guardian and a symbol of courage and power.

Orangutans are great apes living in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra in Indonesia and Malaysia. Orangutans have reddish hair and live mostly in trees. They are among the most intelligent primates that build elaborate nests. They are solitary apes with bonding mainly between mothers and their babies who stay together for several years. Their diet consists mostly of fruit and their lifespan is around 30 years. All Orangutan species are critically endangered on account of their habitats shrinking and illegal trade. Human activities have caused severe declines in populations and ranges. Threats to wild orangutan populations include poaching, habitat destruction, and the illegal trade in wildlife.

Every year World Rhino Day is marked on 22nd September by organizations concerned with the preservation of both African and Asian rhino species, and by the public. Poaching of black rhinos caused a decline in numbers to under 3000 animals in 1995. Thanks to conservation efforts numbers are again over 5000. Southern white rhinos which were near extinction are now back to a population of 20000. Numbers of Asian one-horned rhinos are back from near-extinction to 3500. Sumatran and Javan rhinos are critically endangered with remaining numbers in the dozens only. [Source African Rhino Specialist Group, who reports figures to CITES which has internationally banned trade in wildlife parts and rhino horns since 1977.]

Tevin B launches his creative efforts with this necklace based on a piece of natural white jade that has been carved in the form of Budai.
The white gemstone weighs 70.59 carats and is mounted in an 18 Karat white gold pendant-head set with 164 diamonds, or totally 1.03 carats, and 4 sapphires. Below it is a blue Paraiba tourmaline cut as marquise-cabochon, weighing 17.98 carats. The connector on the pendant-head is a gold loop made following the design of Cadeaux Jewelry’s Hamburg ring with diamonds set in front and on one side. A necklace with green jade beads threads through the loop and fulfills this unique pendant-head in subtle color combination and in style. The origin of the gemstone carving is China.
Budai (or Hotei in Japanese) is a Chinese deity. He is usually identified with Maitreya. He is mostly shown laughing, hence is also referred to as Laughing Buddha. However, Budai is not to be confused with Gautama Buddha. Budai permeates Chinese culture as portrayal of contentment. In Chinese legend Budai was a monk around 900 CE and was a man of loving character.
