The CULT of CADEAUX

Daring to be different, CADEAUX JEWELRY has launched their “Cult Series”, appealing to those with a passion for the dramatic.

Making their mark on the Thailand jewellery scene, although relatively new to Bangkok, CADEAUX JEWELRY was established in Germany in 1975. CADEAUX JEWELRY is the labour of love of Philip Baechtold, together with his wife Dr. Soipetch and their company Baechtold Limited, for gems, jewellery, watches and servicing. Baechtold Limited imports, distributes and retails in high-end watches and desirable jewellery in Thailand, as well as providing service and maintenance. Philip explains that the CADEAUX JEWELRY brand emerged against a backdrop of modernism in art, architecture and engineering. Their store presents not only the CADEAUX JEWELRY brand, but also a collection of large south-sea pearls by Andy Muller, fine Objects d’Art by GG Treasure, and four unique watch brands, namely Corum, Century, Ventura and Faberge.

The secret to the success of this well-established brand asserts Philip Baechtold: “Our design focus is constantly evolving. We combine the fine workmanship of talented craftsmen, from different countries, for unique design.” While their gold jewellery for the main part is made in Thailand, many of their stones are cut or hand-carved oversees, particularly in Germany, by highly reputable carvers in the industry, known for their exquisite precision. Just some of the cleverly crafted gemstones are carved out of tourmaline, aquamarine, jade, jasper, nephrite and lapislazuli. The latter is a beautiful indigo-blue stone, traditionally from the Middle East – particularly from Afghanistan. Today, used in some of CADEAUX JEWELRY’s special carvings, lapislazuli has been used for centuries in Middle Eastern mosaics.

CADEAUX JEWELRY design pieces include classic jewellery items, with something for everyone, from necklaces, bracelets and rings to other enviable accessories for ladies and gentlemen of cultivated taste. However, the latest bold statement from CADEAUX JEWELRY is with a brand new line of standout pieces that express a desire to be anything but conventional. Within the Cult Series, bold is beautiful, as carved gems include symbolic shapes, from nature and ancient legends and tales. The artistic pieces comprise such forms as scarab beetles, skulls, polar bears and gorilla heads. For the love of nature, the Polar Bear Ring comes in 18-karat white gold, plus an inner-band of 18-karat rose gold, togehter with raw tanzanite, diamonds and blue sapphires. The perfect accompaniment to this ring would be the intricate 6 cm long polar bear carved from rock crystal by master carver Stephan Klein. To satisfy one’s primal instincts, there is the opportunity to own a set of Gorilla Survivor cufflinks in 18-karat rose and white gold, a carved obsidian gorilla head, a brown diamond, and embellished with various other diamonds and tsavorite. The natural gemstones used for the masks are Lapis Lazuli, Turquoise, Nephrite, Black Jade and Mother-of-Pearl. Stefan Klein of Germany is the master carver who created the miniature faces using various materials. Careful attention was given to match up a happy and a sad mask exactly, so that no gap appears between the two gems.

The 57.90 carat Obsidian Gorilla is carved by master Stefan Klein; its eye is set with a brilliant-cut diamond. 3.10 carats or 232 green Tsavorites are set in 18 Karat white gold to depict the foliage. The 18 Karat rose gold Ionian column is studded with round and square diamonds and a 0.45 carat brown diamond protrudes from the crevice of a column. In this updated version the bracelet KOELN in 18 Karat pink and white gold with diamonds is featured, replacing the Ginkgo Ring in the original version (2004).

CADEAUX JEWELRY in 2001 chose as its key advertising visual the poster for representing on the one hand the individual who attracts through appearance and makes a statement against any random background, and on the other for symbolizing the very act of zeigen, or showing.

The text in this 2011 version for the first time refers to the CADEAUX JEWELRY shop opening at PENINSULA PLAZA on Bangkok’s Rajadamri Road in August.

The ad also features a clear display of the CADEAUX JEWELRY web-domain in white script on a green background. This element was part of the orginal concept developed in 2001, later dropped, and now again revived, as digital communications and e-marketing become more prominent facets of CADEAUX JEWELRY’S marketing strategy.

A graphic curiosity of this image is the angle at which the poster hangs, which sems to require that the jewelry be pictured at an equally distorted angle of perspective. However, in consultation with CADEAUX JEWELRY’S advertising agency, k:drei agentur für kommunikation in Düsseldorf, Germany, it was decided that the jewlery need not be distorted. As anyone can see, the poster on the wall is a montage, not an actual situation, so the image need not pretend to be realistic, especially since any distortion would deform the jewelry and confound the viewer as to its real look. Indeed, the effect of showing the jewelry in a straight manner intensifies the image and the jewelry’s appearance.

The ad will run in Thai fashion magazines, starting in August with LIPS and followed by a back-cover appearance in PRAEW shortly afterwards.

The conceptual ideas and the shop design have been developed by R. Kaiser, while the detailed technical drawings and the engineering plans have been produced by Professor Anak Narongchai. Construction and contract work is being managed by Kamonek Resanond.

The shop has a surface of 100 square meters and is located at ground level next to the entrance to PENINSULA PLAZA. The shop front inside the plaza is 12 meters wide. On the outside of the building, the shop has 2 large windows (which for the main part will be illuminated lightboxes) facing onto Rajdamri Road and 2 more facing the building’s main entrance accross from Bangkok’s FOUR SEASONS HOTEL.

This new shop, which has been developed in line with CADEAUX JEWELRY’S sharp and clear brand image, will replace the shop-in-shop at Central World that was distroyed on 19 May 2010 when the particular section of Central World where CADEAUX JEWELRY was located collapsed after an arson attack.

Adorned with skulls made of smokey quartz, lemon quartz or rock crystal. These gemstones are carved by master-craftsmen in Germany.

The skull is an eternal memento mori, a reminder that life is transient and that every moment should be lived and enjoyed to the fullest. Also when one is opening letters!

The blades are made of sterling silver, the mounting and other ornaments are held in 18 Karat gold with precious stones or diamonds. The blade is stamped with the logo CADEAUX.

Alternatively, a one-of-a-kind specimen with a beautifully hand carved frog in nephrite. The frog is resting comfortably on an 18 Karat gold cushion. Its eyes are of ruby.

Or a turtle in silver mounted on a cut and polished piece of onyx and adorned with a Ginkgo leaf in 18 Karat gold set with diamonds.

Ring by Bulgari with the vivid blue diamond of 10.95 carats

The chief of Christie’s Americas Jewelry division, Rahul Kadakia, said that even after adjustments for inflation, the price of the diamond had tripled in value, “demonstrating the incredible resilience of diamonds in today’s volatile economic environment and the true lasting value of fine jewelry.”

The ring was sold to a private Asian collectior. During an intense five minute bidding battle, the price of the ring rose from US$ 8 million to US$ 15,762,500.
